Sold a Used Car, But The New Owner Did Not Insure It
Please help!! My friend sold a car a few years ago but the car's title was left in his name. Recently the car was involved in an accident and the new owner did not have insurance. Since the car was still in his name my friend is currently being sued and unsure of what to do. He thinks he may need a lawyer but what kind of lawyer?? PLEASE HELP!
Does your friend happen to have kept a copy of the old car title? Did he remove the license plate when he sold the car? (Didn't he receive registration renewal notices?) I take it he did not file a form HSMV 82050; he should consider doing so.
Your friend should turn the lawsuit over to his current insurance company, which may be able, willing, or even contractually bound to represent him despite his not technically owning the car.
