Unable to identify car buyer to the DMV
dmv never received "release of liability/transfer of title"...failed to make copy/bill of sale...now receiving renewal notices...did not retain name of purchaser and no way to obtain name of purchaser...what do i do?
sold car...mailed in release of liability, but was apparently lost in mail...did not have bill of sale or other documentation with buyer's name, and no way of obtaining buyer's name...dmv keeps sending renewal notices...new owner has never registered vehicle..please help!
Your obligations and remedies would vary by state, so it depends upon where the car was registered. Have you tried discussing your situation with somebody from your state's DMV?
yes...california dmv...retained attorney...attorney submitted request for release of liability...dmv won't because we can't provide name of buyer...i can't believe we are the only ones this has happened to...there must be some way of resolving this, surely...any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated...worried about our liability
Your lawyer may be able to initiate a legal action to get a court to order the DMV to remove the registration. But that could be a complex and costly way to achieve your goal (assuming the court grants the order).
Have you tried running any sort of search based upon the VIN (I'm not sure what searches are available, beyond accident reports, but there may be others), which might enable you to track down where the car might now be?
