Randomly selected for proof of insurance
I live in Ohio and I was randomly selected to show proof of insurance for 6/7/06. My car was uninsured from 5/2/06-6/13/06 becuase I was having major car problems, so the car was not driveable. It sat in my driveway. I called the DMV to explain this and they told me I had to prove that the car was not being driven and to write a letter explaining what happened and evidence backing up my story. My roomate and I work on our cars so I do not have a reciept from a mechanic, but i have a receipt from the auto parts store. The thing is, shouldnt they have to prove that I was driving my car while uninsured since I am being accused and possibly penalized? I live only 1 mile from my work so I got there by foot and hitched rides from others. How can i prove this so my license does not get suspended?!!!!!
Simply do what the DMV asked you to. A letter from your employer would also help.

As lwpat suggests, respond to the notice and explain your situation and provide a copy your parts receipt. You could also include a Mapquest map showing how close work is to your home. You need to convince the DMV that you had an excusable lapse in insurance coverage. If true, you may want to explain that were't aware of or forgot about the requirement, or you let it lapse while the car was off the road, or you had a temporary situation where you couldn't afford the insurance or the insurance and the repairs.
I know in some states if you drop insurance or it expires u have to return ur plates. in NY thats the law. so.........
