how do I get US money to Canada for cheap?

I am a dual citizen US/Can and I have American and Canadian bank accounts. I need to figure out a way to get money from my American bank accounts to Canada cheaply and effectively. I.e. I want to be able to pay my rent with my American bank account. I have credit cards for both US and Canadian banks.
How would this work? Could I just write myself a check from my American bank and cash it in my Canadian bank? Am I going to get screwed on the exchange? Is there a better way?

https://www.xe.com/fx/ is what I used when I was living in both USA and Canada to move money around. You get much better than bank rates and it is very reliable.
